A Do-It-Yourself Dinner Party
By Lothar. Filed in Germany |We are in Köln (Cologne) this week, and Gabi´s students go to school and stay with their German host families.
Yesterday, Gabi took the group to the Museum Ludwig. It has a great collection of contemporary art and our museum guide explained some works of Andy Warhol to us.
We also saw paintings of German expressionists and a special exhibit of the surrealistic art of Salvador Dali. At the end, I explored the museum on my own and saw a collection of photographs of celebrities.
I learned that Queen Victoria was the most photographed person during the 19th century. The pictures of her, during her 60-plus years of being the Queen, were used for political purposes and shipped all over the British Empire, which included about 25% of the world population at that time.
Afterwards Gabi and I took 17 of her students to the Agrippa pool complex. We had a great time jumping off the high-dive tower, going down the waterslide and relaxing in the outdoor saltwater heated massage pool. The weather cooperated, the sun was shining and the thermometer showed 25° Celsius.
At night, Dagmar had invited all the teachers and spouses to come to her house for a dinner party. Gabi and I were chauffeured there in style. Maria and Joachim took us along in their black Mercedes S-class extra-long limousine. To our surprise nothing had been prepared for the dinner when we arrived at 8 PM. Within a very short time, Joe, Rob, Gabi, Dagmar and myself were learning how to make potato-pancakes from scratch : peeling, cutting, shaving, grinding, mixing with oats and frying the finished product.
Joachim ( Dagmar´s husband and our host here in Köln) is a criminal law defense attorney and was not amused at all by the do-it-yourself dinner. He successfully managed to stay away from the kitchen, but loved eating the potato pancakes with salmon.
We had a nice evening and it was once again close to midnight, before Gabi and I could drop into our bed. Gabi will have to sleep for a week, after we get home.

Sonja laughed so much she broke the layout.
Have fun with the rest of the trip, and see you at home!
