Biking To Seligenstadt

Tuesday, July 4th, 2006

We are staying with Maria and Rolf in Rodenbach near Hanau. Today is July 2nd and we are enjoying their great hospitality and another sunny day in Germany. After a late breakfast we are mounting our bicycles and pedal through the forest behind their house and after a short time are on a trail along the river “Main”. We visit the Benedictine monastery ” Einhard-Basilika” with it’s huge herb garden for curing many different ailments. They still have an old waterdriven flour mill, where they make and sell fresh bread once a week. Too bad that we are here on a Sunday, the day of rest! Einhard had founded this monastery in 834.

“Les Bleus” Against Brazil

Saturday, July 1st, 2006

Our World-Cup-fan journey is almost over. Today is July 1st, Gabi’s birthday!!

We wake up to a sunny morning and have breakfast on the top floor of our Hotel Wilmersdorf, overlooking the roofs of Berlin. We take the S-Bahn from Berlin-Zoo to Berlin Spandau, but do not go to the famous Spandau prison ( Rudolf Hess was the last WWII criminal inmate here, when he died in 1987 at the age of 93. The official version of his death was suicide by hanging himself with an extension cord. His family believes that he was killed by the British Secret Intelligence Service. This would be supported by the fact that Hess could not walk without help and could not lift his arms above his head). Instead, we take the ICE 875 to Göttingen and ICE 1871 to Hanau, near Frankfurt. We arrive at a quarter past one and Rolf is already at the train platform, welcoming us.
