“Les Bleus” Against Brazil
By Lothar. Filed in Germany |Our World-Cup-fan journey is almost over. Today is July 1st, Gabi’s birthday!!
We wake up to a sunny morning and have breakfast on the top floor of our Hotel Wilmersdorf, overlooking the roofs of Berlin. We take the S-Bahn from Berlin-Zoo to Berlin Spandau, but do not go to the famous Spandau prison ( Rudolf Hess was the last WWII criminal inmate here, when he died in 1987 at the age of 93. The official version of his death was suicide by hanging himself with an extension cord. His family believes that he was killed by the British Secret Intelligence Service. This would be supported by the fact that Hess could not walk without help and could not lift his arms above his head). Instead, we take the ICE 875 to Göttingen and ICE 1871 to Hanau, near Frankfurt. We arrive at a quarter past one and Rolf is already at the train platform, welcoming us.
Maria had prepared a delicious birthday dinner and we enjoy the food and company of our friends, sitting in their beautiful back yard. Rolf is an avid gardener, and I try different berries and fruits from his garden. While strolling through their little paradiise, the berries, cherries, apples, peaches, pears, plums, and grapes practically fall into your mouth,
Now we are full of energy and head into Frankfurt for the match Brazil:France.encounter the by now familiar scenes of huge flag-waving crowds, dressed in the colors of their respective nations. Ironically, there appear to be many more South American than French soccer fans. In downtown Frankfurt we are entertained by street musicians from Brazil, but the public viewing areas along the river Main are already hopelessly overcrowded. We find a bar in Sachsenhausen where we grab our own picnic tables and benches, getting comfortable in a small cobblestoned square, joining the crowd in front of big screen TV’s. The game is exciting, but the Brazilian superstars Ronaldo, Ronaldinho and Robinho do not know how to be team players. It is 0:0 after the first half, but for the second half France comes out on the attack. Henry scores a goal for France in the 57th minute and “Les Bleus” win the game. The French team played a better game and deserved to win, but it was a big upset and a sad day for Brazil, where they take Soccer very seriously. We hear that some of the Brazilian players, who play for European soccer clubs, won’t even dare to go home after this defeat in the World Cup.
