Sleepless In Huahine
By Lothar. Filed in Huahine |We have been in our Fare ( bungalow) at the Pension Fare Maeva ( meaning “house of welcome”) for 3 days now, and we had very little sleep. The roosters ( at least three) start their crowing competition between 3:30 and 4 AM, and there is no getting away from them. Chicken and roosters are roaming free all over the place, including right around our house!
It poured buckets for 2 nights and the deluge hitting our corrugated tin roof kept us awake for a good part of the nights! We also have a “spirit” in our bathroom!
It could not figure out the scraping noise, coming from the bathroom intermittently throughout the night. It was loud enough to wake me up! On the 3rd day, I finally investigated. I inspected the outside of our bungalow and the source of the noise turned out to be palm fronds, being pushed across the corrugated tin roof by the wind!
On Sunday, July 15, we took our Fiat Panda and toured the island, Huahine Nui(big) and Huahine Iti (small), which are actually 2 islands connected by a bridge. It was hot and sunny and we had Sunday Brunch at Pension Mauarii, overlooking the emerald-blue lagoon. The setting was beautiful, the service on island time. After ordering our ham and cheese sandwich, it took 100(!) minutes for the food to make it from the kitchen to our table, and about 7 minutes to eat it. I really should not use a watch any more!
Afterwards, we went snorkeling off the beach at Relais Mahana. The reefs were pretty colorless, and the sandy bottom along the beach was covered with big, black-greenish sea cucumbers. We tip-toed around the slimy creatures, and were happy that we did not stay at this expensive resort.
On the way home, we stopped at one of the Roulottes “meals on wheels” trucks, which are parked from morning to night at the Fare(the capital) waterfront. A very tasty crepe with Nutella and Banana was our treat for the day.
